In Catan (formerly known as The Settlers of Catan), players compete to dominate the island of Catan by constructing settlements, cities, and roads. Each turn, dice are rolled to determine which resources the island produces. Players then collect these resources—wood, grain, brick, sheep, and stone—in card form to build their civilizations, aiming to reach 10 victory points to win the game.

To set up, large hexagonal tiles depicting resources or a desert are placed randomly in a honeycomb pattern, surrounded by water tiles, some featuring exchange ports. Number tokens, corresponding to die rolls from two six-sided dice, are placed on each resource tile. Each player starts with two settlements (representing houses) and roads (representing sticks), which are placed on intersections and borders of the resource tiles. Players collect resource cards based on the tiles adjacent to their most recently placed settlement. A robber pawn is placed on the desert tile.

Imagine embarking on an era of exploration: after enduring a long and arduous voyage, your ships arrive at an uncharted island named Catan! But you are not alone; other daring explorers have also arrived. The race to settle Catan is on!

Victory points are earned by building settlements and cities, achieving the longest road and the largest army (via development cards), and obtaining development cards that grant additional victory points. When a player reaches 10 victory points (some of which may be kept secret), they declare their total and win the game.

If you accumulate 10 or more victory points during your turn, the game ends and you win! If you reach 10 points during someone else’s turn, the game continues until any player (including yourself) reaches 10 points on their turn.
