Riven is the critically acclaimed successor to Myst, expanding the series’ universe with deeper lore, more complex puzzles, and a richly atmospheric world realized through high-resolution prerendered environments. You once again take on the role of The Stranger, sent by Atrus to rescue his wife Catherine and to stop the tyrannical rule of Atrus’s father, Gehn—who is attempting to rebuild the fallen Age of Riven as his own collapsing empire.
The adventure unfolds across multiple interconnected islands, each filled with intricate mechanical puzzles, cryptic symbols, and environmental storytelling. Unlike Myst, Riven’s puzzles are tightly woven into the world’s culture and history—requiring careful observation of wildlife, machinery, geography, and language. The game features full-motion video sequences blended seamlessly into the prerendered world, along with an iconic ambient soundtrack by Robyn Miller that greatly enhances the tension and mystery.
The PlayStation version spans 5 discs, preserving the PC game’s visual detail while adapting all navigation and interactions to controller-friendly inputs.
