Exile: Wicked Phenomenon places players in the land of Chaltar, where an otherworldly chaos is emanating from an ancient tower. You assume the role of Sadler, a Syrian assassin, and alongside companions Rumi, Kindi, and Fakhyle, you must explore dungeons, battle hordes of demons, and unravel the mystery behind the spreading madness. The game revives many controversial elements—such as narcotic items and religious iconography—that were previously toned down in the series’ console entries.
Exile: Wicked Phenomenon is the North American release of the Japanese Super CD-ROM² title エグザイル II 邪念の事象 (Exile II: Janen no Jishō). While the original Japanese release features a more balanced difficulty curve and slightly different enemy stats, the U.S. version—localized by Working Designs—was significantly rebalanced, making enemies stronger and requiring more grinding to maintain the game’s pacing. Certain themes, religious symbolism, and cultural references were also altered or edited for the U.S. market, though the core story and areas remain the same.
Working Designs became famous for bringing niche Japanese titles to North America with exceptional care. Other notable games they dubbed or localized include:
-
Lunar: The Silver Star (Sega CD)
-
Lunar: Eternal Blue (Sega CD)
-
Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete (PlayStation)
-
Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete (PlayStation)
-
Vay and Popful Mail (Sega CD)
-
Arc the Lad Collection (PlayStation)
-
Albert Odyssey: Legend of Eldean (Sega Saturn)
-

Their voice casting, humor-infused scripts, and high production values made Working Designs one of the most respected localization studios of the era.
