Set in feudal Japan during the Genroku era, Muramasa: The Demon Blade follows the parallel journeys of two protagonists ensnared by the power of cursed swords forged by the legendary blacksmith Muramasa. Kisuke, a fugitive ninja with no memory of his past, travels east across Honshu while pursued for a crime he no longer remembers. Simultaneously, Momohime, a princess inadvertently possessed by the vengeful spirit of swordsman Jinkuro Izuna, travels west in a quest to reclaim a lost body for the intruder. Their paths frequently cross as they battle demons and gods from Japanese mythology, ultimately seeking 108 mystical blades to fulfill their destinies and thwart a power-hungry shogun whose greed threatens to plunge the world into supernatural chaos.
