code_18 is a sci-fi visual novel and a first game in the Infinity series not developed by KID. The player plays as Hayato, a high-school student at Ryuusei Academy in Tokyo. As a part of school’s science team, he devised a gizmo that should allow him to fly and reach for the skies. But, just as he was about to test it, he notices a girl falling from the sky, carrying the same kind of device. He tries to save her, but dies trying. Fast backward, the time resets to the same day he was about to test his flying device.
During the course of the game, upon reaching a certain date, Hayato skips back through time to the same day every time, but without his memories of the events that have transpired, unaware or who or what is causing the loop, and what’s more, of even being in a time loop. As with many other visual novels, most of the gameplay is focused on reading through the story with limited interaction of occasion choices player must make.
The story blends:
-
Time loops and branching paths
-
Phone-based communication and text messages
-
Mystery, romance, and science fiction
-
Route-specific endings with multiple heroines
The style is driven by dialogue choices, schedule management, and character bonding, eventually revealing the secret behind the time distortions and the nature of “code_18.”
