Legendary Axe II is a dark, mythic action-platformer where you battle through demon-ridden lands to rescue a kidnapped princess and confront an evil warlord who has plunged the kingdom into chaos. Unlike the first game, this sequel features a grittier visual tone, heavier combat focus, and a new protagonist—giving the adventure a more mature, brutal edge. Each stage is filled with monstrous creatures, environmental traps, minibosses, and towering end-bosses that demand precision timing and aggressive offense.

Gameplay centers on three weapon types—sword, axe, and morning star—each with unique range, speed, and damage. Players can upgrade their weapon power and health by collecting hidden items, while navigating tight platforming segments and multi-layered levels. The game combines sharp TurboGrafx-16 spritework with a booming soundtrack and fast, responsive controls, creating one of the console’s signature hack-and-slash experiences.

Legendary Axe II was released in Japan under the title “Ankoku Densetsu” (暗黒伝説), which translates to “Dark Legend.”

Unlike the U.S. release, the Japanese title presents the game as a standalone dark fantasy action title, not a direct sequel to the first Legendary Axe. NEC rebranded for the North American market to capitalize on the popularity of the first game, even though the two games were developed as unrelated projects. This is why the tone, mechanics, and world feel dramatically different between the two titles.
