As indicated by the game’s name, it takes place two years after the last canonical The King of Fighters game, The King of Fighters 2001. The King of Fighters 2003 marks the beginning of the Ash Saga, introducing a brand-new protagonist, a shift in narrative tone, and one of the biggest gameplay overhauls in KOF history. Set after the events of the NESTS Saga, the game follows mysterious newcomer Ash Crimson and his involvement in a series of political, supernatural, and personal conflicts surrounding the legendary Sacred Treasures.
2003 replaces the traditional 3-on-3 knockout system with Multi-Shift Tag Battles, allowing players to switch characters in real time during a fight. This fast-paced tag mechanic introduces combo extensions, tag pressure, and new team strategies never seen before in the series up to that point.
The King of Fighters 2003 (KOF 2003, or KOF ’03) is a fighting video game for the Neo Geo arcade and home platforms, produced by SNK Playmore in 2003. It is the tenth game in The King of Fighters series and the last one released for the Neo Geo, which had served as the primary platform for the series since The King of Fighters ’94.
The roster is packed with KOF favorites and new faces, including:
-
Ash Crimson – the sly, green-flame wielder
-
Duo Lon – assassin from the Hizoku clan
-
Shen Woo – street brawler from Shanghai
-
Gato – fan-favorite from Garou: Mark of the Wolves
-
Classic veterans like Kyo, Iori, Terry, Mai, Ryo, and Kim
Known for its bold art direction, fast animations, and cinematic special moves (especially the new Leader Super Special Moves), KOF 2003 pushes the Neo Geo hardware to its limit.
