Waku Waku 7 is a bright, hyper-stylized 2D fighting game by Sunsoft, celebrated for its colorful personality, over-the-top humor, and anime-inspired cast. As the spiritual successor to Galaxy Fight, it refines Sunsoft’s fighting engine with faster pacing, smoother combos, and a distinct comedic flair that sets it apart from more serious Neo Geo fighters.
The game features seven wildly unique fighters—each seeking the legendary “Waku Waku Balls,” mystical artifacts said to grant any wish. Characters include Arina (the energetic bunny girl), Rai (thunder spirit), Mauru (giant pink monster), Slash (the serious swordsman), and the fan-favorite boss Fernandez (a gigantic, bouncing fireball creature).
The game is celebrated for:
-
Vibrant, anime-quality spritework
-
Hilarious animations and special intros
-
Screen-filling super attacks
-
Distinctive character personalities
-
A playful parody of fighting games and anime tropes
The Japanese AES release is considered one of the most collectible Neo Geo titles due to its limited print run and the strong cult following the game has maintained since the ’90s.
The character designs for Waku Waku 7 were created by Kouji Ogata (緒方耕治) who also worked on Galaxy Fight: Universal Warriors (precursor to Waku Waku 7) and Astra Superstars (another over-the-top, airborne fighting game).
